WSPS Volunteers

Helping Ontarians become healthier and safer at home, at work and in the community

WSPS serves the health and safety needs of 154,000 businesses and 3.8 million employees. We've made a promise to put health and safety solutions within reach of every employee and employer in the province. With a limited number of staff and resources, WSPS relies on a strong volunteer network to fulfill this promise.

WSPS volunteers establish and maintain relationships with other safety system partners and related organizations to support the WSPS vision, mission and goals. Their contribution to the Road to Zero is well recognized within WSPS and among the health and safety system partners in the province. With commitment and passion, WSPS volunteers act as safety advocates and champions in both large and small communities in Ontario; they help to develop cultures of safety in their own homes, at their workplaces, in their cities and towns.

They help reduce workplace injuries, illness and deaths by providing their time and expertise to spread our message. Their efforts can be seen through their involvement in our youth outreach programs, regional conferences, knowledge exchange events, and many other initiatives across the province. In turn, volunteers state that their involvement with us is personally and professionally fulfilling and has a positive impact on health, safety and wellness in their workplaces.

WSPS takes this commitment seriously. Our volunteers are carefully recruited and their relationship with WSPS is managed with the same diligence that we manage employee relationships including position descriptions, orientation and information sessions, regular communication and documentation. We ensure that volunteers' involvement with WSPS is meaningful and that they see a clear line of sight between their work and the organization's mission and business goals.

In summary, the underlying principles of our volunteer management program are

  • volunteers are integral to the success of our organization and to the health and safety system in Ontario
  • volunteers bring skills, abilities, knowledge and influence to our clients, our partners and communities across the province
  • volunteers are health and safety advocates and champions of WSPS's mission and vision
  • WSPS manages its volunteer program with diligence and rigor, following the universal principles of volunteer management

We are truly grateful for our volunteers and the employers who allow their employees to take time away from their regular work to share their expertise and knowledge with our clients, our partners and the communities that we serve.
