Under the Occupational Health & Safety Act, employers are required to have at least two members of the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) trained in health and safety. The certification process consists of two phases: Part 1 Basic Certification and Part 2 workplace hazard training (also known as Sector Specific Certification). Appropriate for all sectors, this program is the first part of the training process for individuals to be certified under guidelines established by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and enforced by the Ministry of Labour. Those attending onsite sessions can choose from biological; chemical; confined space; driving; energy; environmental; ergonomic; fire and explosion; machine guarding; noise; physical; slips trips and falls; working alone; working at heights; workplace violence and occupational hazards. Sector Specific Courses
EMS Sector Specific
This EMS Sector Specific Program identifies the hazards Paramedics face in regards to their role in providing pre-hospital care to the sick and injured throughout Ontario. The goal of the program is to provide the EMS worker with the knowledge and understanding of Hazards facing them in their course of duties. These Hazards are not focused to inside the workplace, but areas "outside the box" (outside the Station) as well. Topics included are; Traffic and Vehicle Safety, Ergonomic (MSD) hazards, Slips-Trips & Falls, Biohazards, Behavioral Patients, Hazards related to Confined Spaces, Trenching, Electrical and Specialized patient access issues (land/water/heights). The program assists the Health and Safety committee member with areas for improvement to reduce injuries and illness in the workplace, wherever it may be for the Paramedic. Fire Sector Specific
This two day training course will provide knowledge and understanding of hazards faced by the Ontario Fire Service workers and is the level 2 training required to be certified after basic certification training. It is also a good session for those interested in learning more about special safety issues and concerns that fire/rescue personnel face every day. The topics that will be covered in the program are: Legislation, Section 21 Guidance Notes, Traffic and Vehicle Operation Safety, Respiratory Issues in the Fire Service, Slips/Trips/Falls, Ergonomics and MSD’s Specialized Hazards in Fire Response, Health and Wellness in the Fire Service, Specialized Considerations, Program Action Planning. Police Sector Specific
This two day training course provides knowledge and understanding of hazards faced by the Police sector and is the level 2 training required to be certified after basic certification training. Modules are offered individually or collectively as a program. The modules include: Water and Ice Rescue; Prisoner Handling; Ergonomics; Chemical and TDG Hazards; Electrical; Confined Space and Trenching Rescue; Indoor Air Quality; and Slips, Trips and Falls.
