Accident Investigation (Duration: 1/2 day)
This seminar looks at the importance and content of an effective accident investigation program in a practical working model.

Competent Supervision and Due Diligence
Due Diligence Workshop (available in English and French)
Being duly diligent always works to your benefit. It is important to include health and safety in every aspect of any job. Demonstrate to staff that health and safety is a central part of who you are and how you work. Expect the same attitude and performance from all those for who you are responsible, and document everything you do to bring this about. Proof of due diligence is the only way of defending oneself or an organization should there be a serious workplace injury or illness.
Effective Leadership Book 1: Legislation, Standards, and Codes (half day training) Health
Book 1 outlines the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), the Ontario health care regulations and other related legislation, codes and standards. Knowledge of applicable legislation, standards and codes contributes to effective management processes. Part of a five education session series that prepares a leader to be a competent supervisor, as defined in the OHSA.
Effective Leadership Book 2: The Internal Responsibility System and Due Diligence (half day training) Health
Book 2 describes the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) and associated responsibilities of workplace parties. Defines the concepts of an IRS and due diligence, and identifies behaviours that promotes an effective IRS, and ways in which workplace parties can demonstrate due diligence. Participants will understand the roles and responsibilities of workplace parties within an IRS. Part of a five education session series that prepares a leader to be a competent supervisor, as defined in the OHSA.
Effective Leadership Book 3: Hazard Awareness and Control (half day training) Health
Book 3 outlines the legislative responsibilities in hazard identification and control. Participants will learn to identify potential hazards in the workplace, the role of workplace parties in hazard recognition, assessment, control and evaluation. The steps involved in a hazard analysis will be reviewed, as well as the steps to conducting effective workplace inspections. Part of a five education session series that prepares a leader to be a competent supervisor, as defined in the OHSA.
Effective Leadership Book 4: Incident/Event Causation and Investigation (half day training) Health
Book 4 outlines the legal requirements for investigating incidents and required reporting. The various types of incidents are reviewed as well as the factors that can contribute to incidents, and the steps to follow for effective investigations. Part of a five education session series that prepares a leader to be a competent supervisor, as defined in the OHSA.
Effective Leadership Book 5: Practical Approaches to Effective Leadership – Moving Beyond Compliance (half day training) Health
Book 5 takes the leader beyond the basic legislative requirements and introduces the concept of incorporating safety into your organizational culture. The relationship between leadership style and health and safety outcomes are identify, as well as the importance of promoting a healthy and safety culture. Part of a five education session series that prepares a leader to be a competent supervisor, as defined in the OHSA.
Health and Safety for Supervisors and Managers Seminar (2 days) (Education)
This is a manager and supervisor workshop modeled after the principle components of Certification combined with the prevention of the principle causes of incidents in educational facilities. Modules include: OHS Act, IRS, Due Diligence, Regulations and Incidents, Recognizing, Assessing & Controlling Health Hazards and Recognizing, Assessing & Controlling Safety Hazards, Workplace Inspections and the Supervisor's Role in Return to Work.
Health and Safety for Supervisors and Managers Seminar (2 days) (Municipal)
This program was updated in 2009 and originally resulted from a partnership between PSHSA (then the Municipal Health and Safety Association), the Region of York, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, this program is designed to help supervisors and managers comply with legislative requirements and provide a healthy work environment. A wide range of topics is covered, including supervisory responsibilities, legislation, occupational hazard recognition and control, ergonomics and workplace inspections.
Health and Safety Refresher for Supervisors and Managers (1 day)
This short refresher program is appropriate for those Managers and Supervisors who have previously attended the 2 day course. Responsibilities related to the OHS Act and Regulations are reviewed.

Hazard Recognition and Control
Hazard Recognition (1/2 day) - Municipal
Identifying and controlling workplace hazards involves many processes. It’s more than simply “inspecting hazards”. Before we can effectively control hazardous conditions and unsafe behaviors, we need to be familiar with their characteristics and the necessary processes to make sure they are promptly identified and analyzed. The questions and exercises in this one day workshop will help you become more familiar with hazard control concepts and through discussions of the many types of hazards that may exist in the workplace. Participants will discuss the various elements of an effective hazard control program, the nature of hazards in the workplace, and finally put everything learned together in a final exercise. The purpose of this workshop is to provide the basic knowledge and skills to identify, analyze and apply control strategies to eliminate or reduce hazardous conditions and unsafe practices in the workplace.
Risk Assessment/Job Hazard Analysis (1/2 day)
Identifying hazards and assessing the level of risk associated with those hazards is the most important activity you perform every day, at work and away from work. Effective health and safety management is based on a universal understanding of risks and how to control them through good planning. Objectives of the Program are To describe the Risk Assessment process and how it relates to Job Hazard Analysis; To describe the process of Job Hazard Analysis; To enhance skills by completing a Job Hazard Analysis At the end of this session the participants will be able to conduct a Risk Assessment and Job Hazard Analysis in order to ensure reasonable precautions are taken to protect workers and assist in achieving compliance with Workwell Audit, ISO 9000, CSA Z1000 and BSI 18001.
Community Care: A Tool to Reduce Workplace Hazards (0.5 Day) - Health
The community sector can be an unpredictable place to work. Moving from one client home to another, your workplace is always changing. PSHSA, in partnership with the Ontario community Support Association and St Clair West Services for Seniors has developed a tool that outlines the common hazards present in the home care environment and suggests ways to control these hazard at the worker, employer and system level. Attend this half-day session to learn how to use this tool to: Recognize hazard that might cause a workplace injury. Decide what to do to control the hazard. Know when and what to tell you supervisor.
Personal Protective Equipment Seminar (1/2 day)
Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to assess hazards, select suitable control methods, demonstrate use and maintenance of PPE, and locate and explain the legal requirements for the provision and use of PPE.
Propane Safety Training (1/2 day) (Incl CSAO book)
On completion of this program, the participant will be able to recognize and evaluate the hazards of propane, and demonstrate how to safely connect, disconnect and activate propane torches, vehicles and heaters under 400,000 Btuh.

Healthy Organizations
Healthy Organizations - Healthy People, Healthy Places Workshop
Health and safety and health and wellness programs share a common goal: ensuring that workers have safe and healthy work environments that support healthy lifestyle behaviours. However, too often, health and safety and health and wellness programs compete for resources, to the detriment of the workers and the organization. This workshop introduces participants to research supporting the business case for creating healthy organizations, models for integrating health and safety and health and wellness, examples from organizations which have successfully created a comprehensive health and wellness program, practical suggestions for expanding a health and safety program to reflect health and wellness principles and programming, as well as low cost (and no cost!) ideas for getting started!

Joint Health and Safety Committees (1/2 day)
This program reviews the Legislative requirements for establishing and running a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), and covers the duties and powers of the JHSC. Applicable sections of the Occupational Health & Safety Act are reviewed and discussed.

Orientation
Student Orientation Seminar (1/2 day)
This program is offered to municipalities who hire seasonal staff and provides an overview of roles, responsibilities and hazards associated with jobs assigned to summer students in the municipal sector

Return to Work
Return to Work: Part 1 Legislation and Program Development (1/2 day)
An effective return-to-work (RTW) program should be considered an essential part of every organization whether large or small. This half day session, based on NIDMAR (National Institute of Disability Management and Research) principles, outlines the benefits of a RTW program, an overview of relevant legislation and the steps to developing a comprehensive program using the many tools and templates provided.
Return to Work: Part 2 Case Management and Privacy (1/2 day)
Your return-to-work (RTW) program is in place and now you need to put it to work! This half-day session, based on NIDMAR (National Institute of Disability Management and Research) principles, provides practical tips on managing the RTW program from establishing early contact, collaborating with physicians and preparing for the employee’s return to work. Maintaining privacy and confidentiality during the RTW process is also discussed.

Health and Safety for Building Inspectors (Municipal) (1 day)
This program provides Building Official and Inspectors information on legislation and hazards associated with their jobs
Roles and Responsibilities in Occupational Health and Safety (1/2 day)
Designed to assist workplace parties to better understand their roles and responsibilities in terms of occupational health and safety and promote the internal responsibility systems. Appropriate for all employees. By the end of the course participants will understand the Internal Responsibility System (IRS), due diligence, the legislative rights and responsibilities of workplace parties and how to maintain a safety culture.

Workplace Inspections
Workplace Inspection Seminar (1 day)
This program is designed for all Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) members, health and safety representatives, and supervisors. An inspection is a critical examination of the work environment and is the basis for correction of potential hazardous practices or conditions using short and long-term solutions. Workplace inspections help prevent accidents before they occur. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to describe how to conduct a workplace inspection, including the necessary tools involved, and identify the legal requirements for conducting a workplace inspection.
