Starting in May, 2012 and continuing through to March, 2013, Ministry of Labour inspectors will be conducting proactive inspection blitzes on sector-specific hazards. These blitzes are announced in advance and are designed to raise awareness and increase compliance with health and safety legislation.
From May – August, 2012, proactive inspection blitzes will be focused on New and Young Worker Safety. Between 2006 and 2010, young workers 15-24 years of age accounted for approximately 16% of Ontario’s allowed lost time and medical aid claims, and 32 traumatic fatalities. Overexertion resulting in musculoskeletal disorders and being struck by objects or equipment were the two most common reasons these workers were injured or killed.
