Board of Directors

David A. Ferguson, Chair 

David Ferguson has held the position of Executive Director with Ottawa-Carleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities (OCAPDD) since 1998, and added Open Hands in 2007.  Dave has over 25 years of management experience in the social services sector, both in Ontario and Alberta.

Dave's educational background includes a B.A. in Psychology, a Human Service Management diploma, and a MBA.  Dave has been active with OASIS (Ontario Agencies Supporting Individuals with Special Needs), as Chair of the Labour Relations Committee since its inception in 1999, and as Executive Assistant to the President during 2004 to 2006.  Dave is also a member of the Provincial Network Human Resources Committee and the Developmental Services Human Resources Initiative's Shared Interest Committee.  In 2008, Dave was elected to the Board of Directors of the Ontario Safety Association for Community and Healthcare (OSACH) to represent the "group home" rate group of WSIB.

 
Donald MacLeod, Vice-Chair

Donald MacLeod is the Chief Administrative Officer for the Corporation of the Township of Zorra and has held this position for the past 14 years. Mr. MacLeod served on the Board of Directors for the Municipal Health and Safety Association of Ontario for six years, including two years as Board Chair. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Ontario Municipal Administrators’ Association. Mr. MacLeod attended Wilfrid Laurier University and Fanshawe College. He resides in London with his wife and three children, where he is actively involved in coaching minor sports.

Normand Lavallee, Treasurer of the Board

Executive Director, Financial Services for Laurentian University. Norm provides both operational and programmatic support to the organization. He supervises the finance unit and is the chief financial spokesperson for the organization and is responsible to report on all strategic and tactical matters as they relate to budget management, cost benefit analysis, forecasting needs and the securing of new funding. Norm is responsible for leadership in the financial management and services of all of the operations of the University and provides the financial administration management for control of any and all funds which attach to the broad University community.

Past experience includes being the Chief Operating Officer of NORCAT (a techno business incubator combined with Health and Safety Training), with previous management and financial experience in for profit and not-for-profit organizations, such as Spectrum 2000 Communications Group, Northern Communications Services, Science North and Manitoulin Transport.

Norm is a Chartered Accountant, a Certified Management Accountant and a Charter Director.

Louise Logan, President & CEO, PSHSA

Louise Logan is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Public Services Health and Safety Association

As a strategic leader, Louise has been involved in workplace health and safety and system transformation at the provincial, national and international levels for over 15 years in both a professional and volunteer capacity. As the first Vice-President and Chief Review Officer for WorkSafeBC, she designed and led the start up operations of the strategic business plan, operating budget, human resources and operational infrastructure. As Director General of Policy & Regulation, Louise was responsible for advising WorkSafeBC's Board of Directors on health and safety issues affecting 165,000 employers, 1.8 million workers and $800 million in annual benefit payments. Louise is past Chair of the B.C. Provincial Advisory Committee on Occupational Health and Safety Regulatory Review, founding Chair of the Occupational Disease Advisory Committee, and has chaired numerous stakeholders committees.

Louise holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours Degree from the University of Toronto. She is a graduate of the Executive Program at the Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario.

Doug Allan

Doug Allan is the Labour Relations Specialist at the Police Association of Ontario and is responsible for assisting 58 Police Associations representing over 33,000 police personnel in Ontario on labour relations matters, including grievances, discipline, and contract bargaining. He is also responsible for developing and presenting labour representative development seminars for Police Association Executives. Since 2006, Doug has been the co-chair to the Ontario Police Section 21 Health and Safety committee. Doug began his career as a police officer in 1976 serving with the Niagara Regional Police Service. While in Niagara, Doug spent 10 years as an elected Police Association Executive including three years as President.

Doug served as the Administrator for the Hamilton Police Association representing approximately 1000 frontline police and civilian personnel from September 1994 to January 2006. From 2000 to 2007 Doug served on the Board of Directors of the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby, Ontario. He also served as the Board Chair for the Deer Park Villa Nursing Home in Grimsby.

In 2003, Doug was decorated with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, which is awarded to Canadian Citizens who have made a significant contribution to their fellow citizens, community and country.

Anthony Brown

Anthony Brown is the General Counsel at the Toronto District School Board. He received a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Ottawa, a Master’s degree in education from Brock University, and a Master of Laws degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1979, and has practised primarily in the areas of education law and labour law. After experience in private practice, he served as in-house counsel for a school board (1983-1990) and at the Ontario Ministry of Education (1991-1999). He was appointed as a Vice-Chair of the Ontario Labour Relations Board in 1999.

Mr. Brown is the author of the Legal Handbook for Educators (6th ed.), co-author with Mr. Justice M. Zuker of Education Law (4th ed.), and consulting editor of Thomson Carswell’s Annual Consolidation of Ontario Education Statutes and Regulations.

 

 

Mary Guise

Mary Guise has been a nurse educator in Hamilton for 35 years. She received her BScN from McMaster University, M Ed (Administration) from Brock University and PhD (Nursing) from McMaster University. Mary has spent her career in Nursing Programs at Mohawk College in Hamilton, teaching and coordinating in the Diplomas and Practical Nursing programs and played a key role in the development of the Collaborative McMaster Mohawk Conestoga BScN program. Mary is currently the Associate Dean of the Collaborative BScN program at the Mohawk College site and the Health Science programs in Continuing Education.

Mary has been a past member of the Board of Directors of St. Joseph's Home Care and is currently a trustee on the Board of Trustees for the Hamilton Board Committee of St. Joseph's Health Care System.

She lives in Hamilton with her husband, Bill and two sons, John (Shanghai, China) and Steven (Toronto).

Anne-Marie Malek 

Anne-Marie Malek is President and Chief Executive Officer of West Park Healthcare Centre, a position she has held since 2005. West Park Healthcare Centre provides specialized rehabilitation, complex continuing and long-term care services. Affilated with the University of Toronto, West Park Healthcare Centre's respiratory research program is internationally recognized.

Prior to joining West Park, Ms. Malek held several progressively responsible positions in the hospital sector. Driven by West Park Healthcare Centre's vision of exemplary care inspired by innovation and exceptional performance, Ms. Malek has provided executive leadership to numerous transformational changes at the centre. Under her leadership West Park has been recognized as a Top Employer 2011 in the Greater Toronto Area, a Gold recipient of the Quality Healthcare Workplace Award, and a RNAO Best Practice Spotlight Organization.

Ms. Malek serves on the board of the Regional Geriatric Program of Toronto.

A graduate of Dalhousie University's Bachelor of Nursing Programme, Ms. Malek also holds a Master of Health Services Administration from the University of Alberta and is a certified health executive with the Canadian College of Health Executives.

Michael Papadakis

Michael is married and has six year old twin girls, Julia and Cecelia, as well as a one year old boy named Constantine. He lives just outside of Toronto in Thornhill.

Michael  is a strategic planning, finance, operations, service delivery, marketing and corporate business development executive with experience in North America, the United Kingdom, India and Greece. Michael's executive portfolio has focused within consumer financial services and wealth management, investment banking, and insurance.

Currently, Michael is responsible for Business and Corporate Development at USC Education Savings Plans. USC is an asset management company specializing in the RESP sector with $3 Billion in assets under administration and a leading market share of 11%.

Michael is a certified corporate director through the Institute of Corporate Directors. Michael is presently a Corporate Director and Vice-Chairman with the not-for-profit organization Family Day Care Services. He is also a Corporate Director of Booth Centennial Healthcare Services (Member of the Audit Committee and Member of the Governance Committee).

Michael has a MBA. in Finance and Marketing and a BA in Economics. Michael has also completed executive development programs at Harvard University, at the University of Western Ontario - Ivey School of Business, and at the University of Toronto - Rotman School of Management.

 

Diane Parker

Diane Parker is currently a chemotherapy nurse at Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre in Thunder Bay, and a certified member of their joint health and safety committee.

She has held positions on several boards including the Ontario Nurse’s Association in the portfolio of Health and Safety, the Workers Health and Safety Centre, and the Ontario Safety Association for Community and Healthcare. She also acts as an instructor for the Worker’s Health and Safety Centre.

Diane’s committee service includes a Return to Work committee with the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers, and the Canadian Labour Congress Health and Safety Committee. Keenly interested in worker health and safety, Diane actively engages in efforts to improve worker safety, most recently involving safety engineered medical devices and workplace violence prevention legislation.

Herman Proper

Herman Proper spent a career as teacher, principal, and superintendent in the independent schools of Ontario and British Columbia. Currently retired from employment, he continues to do contract work with several schools.

After graduation from the University of Guelph with a chemistry major, Herman completed his Ontario teaching qualifications and taught in both London, Ontario and later in British Columbia, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in Education.

Upon returning to Ontario, Herman was principal in Chatham, then a superintendent for the high schools of the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools. During those years, he earned his principal’s qualifications and Ontario Supervisory Officer’s Qualifications.

Herman has served on the many boards including positions as Vice-president and President of Teachers’ Associations in Ontario and British Columbia, and of independent school organizations in both Ontario and British Columbia. He also served on the board of the Education Safety Association of Ontario and was chair at the time of amalgamation at the end of 2009.

Don Seymour 

Don Seymour is the Executive Director of WOTCH Community Mental Health Services based in London, Ontario. WOTCH is one of the largest providers of services to persons with serious mental illness in Southwestern Ontario. Prior to this, Don spent 11 years as the Executive Director of Lambton County Developmental Services based in Petolia, Ontario.

Don also served as Municipal Councillor for the town of Petrolia for four years. As Municipal Councillor, Don chaired the Human Resources committee, sat as a member of the Fire Management Board and provided leadership to the town's strategic planning process.

Don holds a BA from the University of Guelph and a MBA from Royal Roads University. He resides in London, Ontario.

Kevin A. Stewart  

Kevin Stewart is currently the Director of Safety at the University of Waterloo and is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional. Kevin holds a B.A. from the University of Western Ontario and a Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from McMaster University.

His past work experience includes a position as a Project Officer/Scientist with the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, and a position in Safety Supervision in the metal trades sector.

Kevin has served on numerous boards, including as a member of the Education Safety Association of Ontario; Chair of the Council of Environmental Health and Safety Officers, Universities of Ontario; member of the National Steering Committee for Canadian Occupational Health and Safety Week; Chair, Canadian Foundry Association, Occupational Health and Safety Committee; and Chair, Industrial Accident Prevention Association, Wentworth School Committee. He was also a Union Local President of the Public Service Alliance of Canada and Union Local Chair of the United Auto Workers.

Sheldon Wolfson

Sheldon Wolfson is Commissioner, Social and Community Services for the Regional Municipality of Halton. This includes the Divisions of Quality and Community Innovation, Services for Seniors, Children's Services, and Employment, Housing and Social Services. Previous to this, he was Halton's Director, Services for Seniors. His background includes senior managment positions in both long-term and acute care facilities.

Professional activities include being Past-Chair for the Ontario Association of Non-Profit Homes and Services for Seniors. He is currently a surveyor and educator with Accreditation Canada along with sitting on several of their advisory committees. Sheldon is also Assistant Professor (Clinical) with McMaster University, School of Nursing and is a member of the Healthcare Leadership Committee for the Mississauga-Halton Local Health Integration Network.

Past activities include serving on the Milton District Hospital Board of Directors in various capacities including Chair, Board Member for the Halton-Peel District Health Council, and membership on the Oakville and Milton Humane Society Board of Directors including the position of Chair.

Sheldon is a Registered Nurse, holds a Masters degree in Health Sciences (M.H.Sc.) from McMaster University and resides in Milton, Ontario.
